Contraction Surgery

I had a classroom full of surgeons today!  Contraction Surgeons!  We performed surgery on a variety of words to practice making contractions.

We had a great time diagnosing, cutting, and repairing bone words to create contractions!

I've updated it a bit since the last time I did it with my students (you can see that post here).  I put together a pack of the materials I used for this lesson.  You can find it here in my TpT store.  I also have a fun independent contraction center on sale for just a $1.

Contraction Surgery!

We had so much fun learning about contractions today.  A couple of days ago, I saw a post on Pinterest from the First Grade Parade about contraction surgery, and since contractions were on the slate for this week, we tried it out.  I bought gloves, masks, and neon bandages from Wal-Mart for less than ten dollars total.  I taught them how contractions work, and then we performed surgery on words to remove certain letters.  It was a blast!
Performing the surgery.

Checking to see that the patient looks good.
Bandaging the patient up.
All patients survived the surgery!
Thanks First Grade Parade and Buzzing About Second Grade for an awesome teaching idea!

And if you're (oh, look at that awesome contraction!) interested, I have a fun contraction center for sale on Teachers Pay Teachers for only $1.
